Falls and the elderly in Ireland have come to my mind because recently due to idle banter with a friend who looks after a relative as best she can, a man in his 70’s -a man who was active, sporty and very fit not too long ago.
She recited how after a number of recent falls thankfully involving only some bad cuts and bruising, that his passion of walking 5 miles every day has ended.
My friend was making the point that we don’t know how lucky we really are reciting that her relative now just sits in a chair all day long-“looking at the walls”.
A tragic story but all too common I would guess and I would suggest this is a fear factor for anyone caring for the elderly.
Being of relevance as a first aid company this led me to do a search on falls and the elderly in Ireland and the HSE actually have a section on their website relevant to the topic.
According to the HSE -link-and to quote them:
Falls are a common but often overlooked source of injury and, in many cases, death in Ireland particularly where the elderly are concerned. Some older adults have a combination of health-related factors that increase their risk of having a fall, such as:
- muscle weakness
- problems with balance and mobility
- poor eyesight
- Falls can also have an adverse psychological impact, particularly on elderly people. A fall can sometimes result in a person losing confidence, becoming withdrawn and feeling like they have lost their independence.
- Around 30% of adults who are over 65 and who are living in the community will experience at least one fall a year. This figure rises to 50% for those who are living in nursing homes or residential care.
It all only makes sense if you think about it.
Falls and the Elderly in Ireland- Prevention Considerations
This YouTube video is not rocket science but is relevant to help you focus on some steps to make a home safer for the elderly.
The tips maybe obvious but are relevant and inexpensive in the scheme of things.
A bit of self promotion-yes-but it also makes common sense to have a First Aid Kit in any elderly persons home.
Being prepared for example to deal with bad cuts on the spot, and so much more.
The HSE also have a downloadable report Strategy to Prevent Falls and Fractures in Ireland’s Ageing Population
